Pakyong, a charming and dynamic hill station, serves as the administrative and geographical heart of Pakyong district in the southeastern corner of Sikkim, India. Encompassing an area of approximately 404 square kilometers (156 square miles), the district is strategically positioned at a latitude of 27.2282031 and a longitude of 88.587925. Additionally, it holds geopolitical significance due to its proximity to the international borders of the People’s Republic of China and Bhutan, making it a critical area from both administrative and security perspectives.
Pakyong district plays a pivotal role as a hub for state-level administrative activities. The town of Pakyong itself, nestled amidst lush greenery and serene landscapes, is known for its warm and welcoming community. The district boasts diverse topography, ranging from verdant valleys to picturesque mountains, making it an attractive destination for both residents and tourists.
One of the key highlights of Pakyong is its modern infrastructure, including the Pakyong Airport, which is a testament to the region’s growing connectivity and development. On April 29, 2022, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang, officially inaugurated the District Administrative Centre of the newly established Pakyong District. The district was formally created in December 2021 through the enactment of the Reorganization of Districts Act 2021 by the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. Pakyong District is organized into three subdivisions: Pakyong, Rangpo, and Rongli.
The name “Pakyong” is derived from the Lepcha words pa yong, meaning “bamboo of the bow.” This nomenclature reflects the traditional Lepcha practice of naming places after significant resources or elements commonly found in the area.
A landmark moment for the district occurred on September 24, 2018, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Pakyong Airport, marking a significant step in enhancing connectivity. Regular commercial air services commenced shortly thereafter on October 4, 2018, establishing Pakyong as a crucial link in the region’s transportation network.
